"Popcorn Superhet Receiver" is a contemporary classical composition by British composer Jonny Greenwood, best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Radiohead. The piece was composed in 2005 and premiered on March 22, 2006, at the Ether Festival in London, performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Robert Ziegler. The composition is divided into three movements, each with its own distinct character and instrumentation. The first movement, titled "I. Arpeggi," features a solo violin playing a series of arpeggios that gradually build in intensity, accompanied by a pulsing rhythm section of bass guitar and drums. The second movement, "II. Glockenspiel and Piano," is a more subdued and introspective piece, featuring the titular instruments in a delicate interplay. The final movement, "III. Ensemble," brings together the full orchestra in a frenzied and chaotic climax, with dissonant chords and jagged rhythms. The title of the piece refers to a type of radio receiver popular in the 1940s and 50s, which used a technique called superheterodyne to amplify and tune in to radio signals. The "popcorn" in the title is a reference to the crackling sound that can be heard when tuning in to a weak or distant signal. This theme of radio technology is reflected in the composition's use of electronic effects and distortion, which give the piece a raw and gritty edge. Overall, "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" is a challenging and experimental work that pushes the boundaries of contemporary classical music. Its unconventional instrumentation and use of electronic effects create a unique and immersive sonic landscape, while its three distinct movements offer a diverse range of moods and textures.
