"Televisoniist/Music for Television" is a contemporary classical composition by Canadian composer Nicole Lizée. The piece was composed in 2010 and premiered on March 3, 2011, at the Winnipeg New Music Festival. The composition is divided into four movements, each of which explores different aspects of television culture. The first movement, "Hitchcock Études," is a tribute to the iconic filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. Lizée uses samples from Hitchcock's films, including dialogue, sound effects, and music, to create a haunting and suspenseful atmosphere. The second movement, "This is Radio," is a nod to the golden age of radio broadcasting. Lizée incorporates samples from vintage radio shows, including commercials, jingles, and news broadcasts, to create a nostalgic and playful mood. The third movement, "Karaoke Etudes," is a playful take on the karaoke phenomenon. Lizée uses samples from popular karaoke songs, including "I Will Survive" and "Total Eclipse of the Heart," to create a humorous and irreverent atmosphere. The final movement, "Televisoniist," is a tribute to the medium of television itself. Lizée uses samples from a wide range of television shows, including sitcoms, dramas, and reality shows, to create a collage of sound and image that reflects the frenetic pace and constant stimulation of modern television culture. Overall, "Televisoniist/Music for Television" is a bold and innovative composition that explores the intersection of music and media culture. Lizée's use of samples and found sounds creates a unique sonic landscape that is both nostalgic and futuristic, playful and thought-provoking.
