Gottfried August Homilius was a German composer and church musician of the late Baroque era. He was born in Rosenthal, Saxony, on February 2, 1714, and died in Dresden on June 2, 1785. Homilius was a prolific composer, and his works include over 200 cantatas, 12 passions, and numerous other sacred works. One of Homilius's most famous works is his cantata "Selig seid ihr, wenn ihr geschmähet werdet" (Blessed are you when you are reviled), which was composed in 1765. The cantata is based on the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount, and it is scored for four soloists (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), choir, and orchestra. The cantata is divided into six movements, each of which reflects one of the Beatitudes. The first movement, "Selig seid ihr, wenn ihr geschmähet werdet," is a lively and joyful chorus that sets the tone for the entire work. The second movement, "Selig sind, die da Leid tragen," is a mournful aria for alto that expresses the idea that those who mourn will be comforted. The third movement, "Selig sind die Sanftmütigen," is a gentle and peaceful aria for soprano that praises those who are meek and humble. The fourth movement, "Selig sind, die da hungert und dürstet nach der Gerechtigkeit," is a passionate and intense aria for tenor that expresses the idea that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be satisfied. The fifth movement, "Selig sind die Barmherzigen," is a tender and compassionate aria for bass that praises those who show mercy to others. The final movement, "Selig sind, die Verfolgung leiden um der Gerechtigkeit willen," is a triumphant chorus that celebrates the idea that those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake will be rewarded in heaven. Overall, "Selig seid ihr, wenn ihr geschmähet werdet" is a beautiful and uplifting work that showcases Homilius's skill as a composer. The cantata is characterized by its expressive melodies, rich harmonies, and masterful use of choral and orchestral textures. It remains a beloved work in the repertoire of sacred music to this day.
