Morphometrics is a contemporary composition by Mexican composer Edgar Barroso. The piece was composed in 2016 and premiered on October 28th of the same year at the Sala Carlos Chávez in Mexico City. Morphometrics is a three-movement work for string quartet that explores the concept of morphological variation in biological organisms. The first movement, titled "Variation I," is characterized by a slow and contemplative pace, with the strings playing long, sustained notes that gradually shift in pitch and intensity. The second movement, "Variation II," is more lively and rhythmic, with the strings playing fast, staccato notes that create a sense of urgency and movement. The final movement, "Variation III," is a return to the slower, more contemplative pace of the first movement, but with a more complex and intricate texture that reflects the idea of morphological variation. One of the key characteristics of Morphometrics is its use of extended techniques, such as harmonics, glissandi, and pizzicato, to create a wide range of timbres and textures. The piece also features a number of unconventional playing techniques, such as bowing the strings with a credit card or using a glass slide to create a sliding effect. Overall, Morphometrics is a complex and thought-provoking work that challenges traditional notions of form and structure in classical music. Through its exploration of morphological variation, the piece invites listeners to contemplate the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and to consider the ways in which music can reflect and respond to the complexity of the world around us.
