Djanaba is a composition by Australian composer Ross Edwards. It was composed in 1983 and premiered in the same year by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The piece is written for orchestra and is approximately 12 minutes in length. Djanaba is divided into three movements, each of which is characterized by a different mood and tempo. The first movement, marked "Moderato," is a slow and contemplative introduction. The second movement, marked "Allegro," is a lively and rhythmic dance. The final movement, marked "Lento," is a slow and mournful conclusion. The piece is inspired by the music of the Aboriginal people of Australia, particularly the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land. Edwards has stated that he was drawn to the "deeply spiritual and meditative quality" of their music, and sought to capture this in his composition. The use of percussion instruments is a prominent feature of Djanaba, with the composer incorporating a variety of traditional Aboriginal instruments such as the didgeridoo, clapsticks, and bullroarer. The use of these instruments, along with the use of unconventional playing techniques, creates a unique and distinctive sound world. Overall, Djanaba is a powerful and evocative work that showcases Edwards' skill in blending traditional and contemporary musical elements. Its use of Aboriginal musical traditions and instruments makes it a significant contribution to the Australian musical canon.
