Ernesto Lecuona was a Cuban composer and pianist who is considered one of the most important figures in Latin American music. He composed a wide range of music, including operas, ballets, and film scores, but he is perhaps best known for his piano music. One of his most famous works is the suite of piano pieces called "Danzas cubanas del siglo XIX" (Cuban Dances of the 19th Century). Lecuona composed the "Danzas cubanas" in 1929, and they were premiered the same year in Havana, Cuba. The suite consists of six movements, each of which is based on a different Cuban dance style from the 19th century. The movements are: 1. La comparsa - This is a lively dance that was often performed during Carnival season. It features a syncopated rhythm and a call-and-response structure. 2. Danza lucumi - This dance is based on the rhythms and melodies of the Yoruba people of West Africa, who were brought to Cuba as slaves. It features a slow, stately tempo and a haunting melody. 3. Almendra - This is a fast, playful dance that was popular in the countryside. It features a syncopated rhythm and a melody that is reminiscent of a folk song. 4. Andalucia - This dance is based on the flamenco music of Andalusia, Spain. It features a fast, intricate rhythm and a melody that is full of passion and drama. 5. Y la negra bailaba! - This dance is based on the rhythms and melodies of the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria. It features a fast, syncopated rhythm and a melody that is full of energy and excitement. 6. La comparsa (reprise) - The suite ends with a reprise of the first movement, which brings the piece full circle. The "Danzas cubanas" are characterized by their lively rhythms, catchy melodies, and colorful harmonies. They are a celebration of Cuban culture and history, and they have become some of the most beloved pieces in the Latin American piano repertoire.
