Gismonda is an opera in four acts composed by Henry Février. The opera was first performed on 29th April 1919 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The libretto was written by Henri Cain and is based on a play by Victorien Sardou. The opera is set in 16th century Rome and tells the story of Gismonda, a beautiful and powerful woman who is married to the Duke of Ferrara. Act I opens with a chorus of monks singing a hymn. Gismonda enters and sings a beautiful aria about her love for her husband, the Duke. The Duke enters and they sing a duet about their love for each other. However, it is soon revealed that the Duke is unfaithful to Gismonda and has a mistress, Bianca. Gismonda is devastated and sings a powerful aria about her pain and anger. Act II takes place in Bianca's apartment. She sings a seductive aria to the Duke, but he is distracted by thoughts of Gismonda. Gismonda enters and confronts the Duke and Bianca. She sings a powerful trio with the Duke and Bianca, expressing her anger and pain. Act III takes place in a garden. Gismonda sings a beautiful aria about her love for the Duke, but she is interrupted by the arrival of a group of conspirators who are plotting against the Duke. Gismonda overhears their plans and decides to warn her husband. Act IV takes place in the Duke's palace. Gismonda confronts the conspirators and saves her husband's life. The Duke realizes his mistake and begs for Gismonda's forgiveness. She forgives him and they sing a beautiful duet about their love for each other. The music of Gismonda is characterized by lush melodies, rich harmonies, and dramatic orchestration. The opera features a variety of musical styles, including arias, duets, trios, and choruses. The vocal writing is demanding, requiring singers with strong voices and excellent technique. Overall, Gismonda is a powerful and emotional opera that explores themes of love, betrayal, and forgiveness. Its premiere in 1919 was a great success, and it remains a popular work in the operatic repertoire.
