The plot of The New Moon revolves around the story of Robert Mission, a French aristocrat who is forced to flee his country after killing a man in a duel. He escapes to New Orleans, where he falls in love with Marianne, the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner. However, their love is threatened by the arrival of Governor Sandoval, who is determined to marry Marianne for her fortune. Robert and Marianne decide to flee to the island of Tortuga, where they join a band of pirates led by the notorious Captain Duval. In the end, Robert and Marianne are able to return to New Orleans, where they are reunited with their families and live happily ever after. The New Moon is composed of two acts and features a total of 18 musical numbers. The music is characterized by its use of romantic melodies, lush orchestrations, and catchy tunes. The operetta's most famous songs include "Lover, Come Back to Me," "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise," and "Stout-Hearted Men." The New Moon was a commercial and critical success, running for 519 performances on Broadway and spawning several touring productions. The operetta was also adapted into a film in 1930, starring Grace Moore and Lawrence Tibbett.
