Antonin Dvorák's opera 'Vanda' was composed in 1875 and premiered on May 17, 1876, at the National Theatre in Prague. The libretto was written by Václav Juda Novotný, based on the play 'Vanda' by Josef Kajetán Tyl. The plot of 'Vanda' revolves around the titular character, a young woman who is forced to marry a man she does not love. Vanda's true love, Ladislav, is a member of a rebel group fighting against the ruling Austro-Hungarian Empire. When Ladislav is captured and sentenced to death, Vanda must choose between saving him or staying loyal to her husband. The opera is divided into three acts, each with its own distinct musical style. The first act is characterized by lively folk melodies and dance rhythms, reflecting the festive atmosphere of a village fair. The second act is more dramatic, with soaring arias and intense ensemble scenes as Vanda struggles with her conflicting loyalties. The final act features a powerful chorus of rebels and a triumphant duet between Vanda and Ladislav. One of the most notable features of 'Vanda' is its use of Czech folk music. Dvorák was a champion of Czech national identity and incorporated traditional melodies and rhythms into many of his works. In 'Vanda', he weaves these elements seamlessly into the score, creating a vibrant and authentic musical landscape. Despite its initial success, 'Vanda' fell out of favor in the years following its premiere. It was overshadowed by Dvorák's later, more famous operas such as 'Rusalka' and 'The Jacobin'. However, in recent years, there has been renewed interest in 'Vanda' as a testament to Dvorák's early mastery of the operatic form and his commitment to celebrating Czech culture.
