Composer:Jan Pieterszoon SweelinckGenre:KeyboardStyle:ChoraleAverage_duration:13:01Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was a Dutch composer and organist who lived from 1562 to 1621. He was one of the most important composers of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods in the Netherlands. One of his most famous works is the choral composition "Wij geloven in eenen God alleen" (We believe in one God alone). "Wij geloven in eenen God alleen" was composed in the late 16th century and is a setting of the Nicene Creed, a statement of Christian faith. The piece is written for four voices (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) and is in the key of G major. It is a relatively short piece, lasting only about two and a half minutes. The composition is divided into three movements. The first movement is a homophonic setting of the first part of the Nicene Creed, "We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth." The second movement is a polyphonic setting of the second part of the Creed, "And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God." The third movement is a homophonic setting of the final part of the Creed, "And we believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life." The characteristics of "Wij geloven in eenen God alleen" reflect Sweelinck's style as a composer. The piece is characterized by its clear and simple harmonies, which allow the text to be easily understood. The vocal lines are also relatively simple, with each voice part having its own melodic line that is easy to follow. The piece is also notable for its use of imitation, where one voice part repeats a melody that has just been sung by another voice part. Overall, "Wij geloven in eenen God alleen" is a beautiful and moving choral composition that reflects Sweelinck's skill as a composer and his deep faith as a Christian. It remains a popular piece in the choral repertoire to this day.More....
