"Total Political Correctness" is a contemporary classical composition by Canadian composer Robert Davidson. The piece was composed in 1992 and premiered on March 6, 1993, by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Kazuyoshi Akiyama. The composition consists of three movements, each with its own distinct character and musical language. The first movement, titled "The Language Police," is a fast-paced and rhythmic section that features a variety of percussive instruments, including marimba, xylophone, and snare drum. The movement is characterized by its use of syncopated rhythms and complex polyrhythms, which create a sense of urgency and tension. The second movement, titled "The Thought Police," is a slower and more contemplative section that features a solo cello accompanied by a string orchestra. The movement is characterized by its use of long, sustained notes and rich harmonies, which create a sense of introspection and reflection. The third and final movement, titled "The PC Police," is a lively and energetic section that features the full orchestra. The movement is characterized by its use of bright, colorful harmonies and playful melodies, which create a sense of celebration and joy. Overall, "Total Political Correctness" is a satirical commentary on the phenomenon of political correctness, which was a hotly debated topic in the early 1990s. The composition uses a variety of musical techniques and styles to explore the different aspects of this complex and controversial issue, from the language we use to the thoughts we think to the way we police ourselves and others.
