"Tigrane" is an opera seria in three acts composed by Johann Adolf Hasse. The opera was first performed on January 4, 1724, at the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo in Venice, Italy. The libretto was written by Antonio Salvi and is based on the story of Tigranes the Great, the king of Armenia. The plot of "Tigrane" revolves around the love triangle between Tigrane, his wife Cleopatra, and the Roman general Lucullus. Tigrane is torn between his love for his wife and his duty to his country. Cleopatra, who is in love with Lucullus, tries to convince Tigrane to ally with Rome against their common enemy, the Parthians. Tigrane is hesitant to do so, but eventually agrees to the alliance. However, when Lucullus betrays Tigrane and tries to take Cleopatra for himself, Tigrane is forced to take up arms against Rome. The music of "Tigrane" is characterized by its virtuosic vocal writing and elaborate orchestration. Hasse was known for his ability to write music that showcased the talents of his singers, and "Tigrane" is no exception. The opera features arias, duets, and ensemble numbers that are both musically and emotionally complex. The premiere of "Tigrane" was a great success, and the opera went on to be performed throughout Europe. Hasse's music was particularly popular in Dresden, where he served as court composer for many years. "Tigrane" was also performed in Vienna, Paris, and London, where it was translated into English and adapted for the stage. Despite its initial success, "Tigrane" fell out of favor in the 19th century and was rarely performed. However, in recent years, there has been renewed interest in Hasse's music, and "Tigrane" has been revived in several productions. The opera is now recognized as one of Hasse's most important works and a significant contribution to the opera seria genre.
