Gottfried August Homilius was a German composer and church musician of the late Baroque era. He was born in Rosenthal, Saxony, on February 2, 1714, and died in Dresden on June 2, 1785. Homilius was a prolific composer, and his works include over 200 cantatas, 12 passions, and numerous other sacred and secular pieces. One of Homilius's most famous works is his cantata "Mir hast du Arbeit gemacht," HoWV 5.47. The cantata was composed in 1765 and premiered in Dresden on the 10th Sunday after Trinity, which fell on August 4 of that year. The cantata is scored for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass soloists, mixed choir, and orchestra. The cantata consists of six movements, each with its own distinct character and musical style. The first movement is a lively and joyful chorus, in which the choir and orchestra praise God for the work he has given them. The second movement is a recitative for the bass soloist, in which he reflects on the difficulties and challenges of work, but ultimately acknowledges that it is a gift from God. The third movement is a duet for soprano and alto soloists, in which they sing of the peace and contentment that comes from doing God's work. The fourth movement is a tenor aria, in which the soloist asks God to give him the strength and courage to continue working, even in the face of adversity. The fifth movement is a recitative for the alto soloist, in which she reflects on the blessings that come from doing God's work, including the love and support of fellow believers. The final movement is a joyful and triumphant chorus, in which the choir and orchestra praise God for the blessings of work and the promise of eternal life. Overall, "Mir hast du Arbeit gemacht" is a beautiful and uplifting work, full of Homilius's characteristic melodic and harmonic inventiveness. The cantata is a testament to the composer's deep faith and his belief in the transformative power of work done in service to God.
