+R, for solo B flat clarinet, is a contemporary classical composition by British composer Roger Redgate. The piece was composed in 2004 and premiered on October 22, 2004, at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in the UK. The composition consists of three movements, each with its own distinct characteristics. The first movement, marked "molto rubato," is characterized by its fluid, improvisatory quality. The clarinetist is given a great deal of freedom to shape the melodic material, which is often fragmented and disjunct. The movement is also notable for its use of microtonal inflections, which add a sense of instability and unpredictability to the music. The second movement, marked "molto agitato," is much more frenetic and energetic than the first. The clarinetist is called upon to execute a series of virtuosic runs and arpeggios, which are often interrupted by sudden pauses and silences. The movement is also notable for its use of multiphonics, which create a complex, layered texture. The final movement, marked "molto espressivo," is the most lyrical and expressive of the three. The clarinetist is given a long, singing line to play, which is accompanied by a series of delicate, shimmering harmonics. The movement gradually builds in intensity, culminating in a series of explosive, virtuosic gestures before coming to a sudden, quiet close. Overall, +R is a challenging and complex work that demands a high level of technical skill and musical sensitivity from the performer. It is also a highly original and innovative composition that pushes the boundaries of what is possible on the clarinet.
