"Substantie for ensemble & live electronics" is a contemporary composition by Austrian composer Peter Jakober. The piece was composed in 2014 and premiered on November 28th of the same year at the Klangspuren Festival in Innsbruck, Austria. The composition consists of three movements, each exploring different sonic textures and timbres. The first movement features a slow, meditative pace with sustained tones and subtle shifts in dynamics. The second movement is more rhythmic and energetic, with percussive sounds and complex polyrhythms. The final movement returns to a more contemplative mood, with delicate, high-pitched sounds and a sense of spaciousness. One of the defining characteristics of "Substantie" is the use of live electronics, which allows the performers to manipulate and transform the sounds of the acoustic instruments in real-time. This creates a dynamic interplay between the acoustic and electronic elements of the piece, blurring the boundaries between the two. Another notable aspect of the composition is its use of microtonality, with many of the pitches falling outside of the traditional Western tuning system. This creates a sense of ambiguity and instability, as the listener is never quite sure where the music is heading harmonically. Overall, "Substantie for ensemble & live electronics" is a challenging and thought-provoking work that pushes the boundaries of contemporary music. Its use of live electronics and microtonality creates a unique sonic landscape that rewards careful listening and attention to detail.
