Flint is a contemporary classical composition by American composer Michael Torke. It was composed in 1993 and premiered on March 4, 1994, by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Neeme Järvi. The piece is approximately 20 minutes long and is divided into three movements. The first movement, titled "Spark," is characterized by its energetic and rhythmic nature. It begins with a fast-paced, syncopated rhythm in the percussion section, which is then joined by the rest of the orchestra. The movement features a variety of musical textures, including moments of dense orchestration and moments of sparse, delicate melodies. The second movement, titled "Heat," is slower and more contemplative than the first. It begins with a haunting melody in the strings, which is then passed around the orchestra. The movement gradually builds in intensity, with the addition of brass and percussion, before returning to the quiet, introspective mood of the opening. The final movement, titled "Light," is the most celebratory of the three. It begins with a fanfare-like melody in the brass section, which is then taken up by the rest of the orchestra. The movement features a number of lively, dance-like rhythms, and culminates in a triumphant coda. Overall, Flint is characterized by its use of vibrant, colorful orchestration and its rhythmic energy. The piece draws inspiration from the composer's hometown of Flint, Michigan, and is intended to evoke the city's industrial history and its resilience in the face of economic hardship.
