Teofane is an opera seria in three acts composed by Antonio Lotti. The libretto was written by Apostolo Zeno and Pietro Pariati. The opera was first performed at the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo in Venice on January 9, 1719. The plot of Teofane revolves around the love story of Teofane, the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor, and Ottone, the King of Italy. The two fall in love, but their relationship is threatened by the machinations of Adelberto, the Duke of Lombardy, who is also in love with Teofane. Adelberto plots to overthrow Ottone and take Teofane for himself. However, Ottone manages to defeat Adelberto and win Teofane's hand in marriage. The opera is characterized by its use of the da capo aria form, which was popular in the Baroque era. The music is highly ornate and virtuosic, with elaborate vocal runs and trills. The orchestration is also rich and colorful, with the use of strings, woodwinds, and brass. Teofane is divided into three acts, each consisting of several scenes. The first act introduces the main characters and sets up the conflict between Ottone and Adelberto. The second act focuses on the love story between Teofane and Ottone, as well as Adelberto's plot to overthrow Ottone. The third act features the final battle between Ottone and Adelberto, as well as the resolution of the love story between Teofane and Ottone. Teofane was well-received at its premiere and went on to become one of Lotti's most popular operas. It was performed throughout Italy and Europe in the 18th century, and was also revived in the 20th century. Today, it is considered a masterpiece of the Baroque era and is still performed by opera companies around the world.
