Deploration is a contemporary classical composition by German composer Wolfgang Rihm. It was composed in 2002 and premiered on September 28, 2002, at the Donaueschingen Festival in Germany. The piece is written for a chamber ensemble consisting of clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. Deploration is a single-movement work that lasts approximately 15 minutes. The piece is characterized by its intense emotional content and its use of extended techniques. Rihm employs a wide range of dynamics, from the softest pianissimo to the loudest fortissimo, to create a sense of tension and release throughout the piece. The opening of Deploration features a mournful clarinet solo, which is soon joined by the other instruments. The ensemble engages in a series of intense, dissonant exchanges, with each instrument taking turns leading the group. The music is highly chromatic, with frequent use of microtones and other non-traditional pitch intervals. As the piece progresses, Rihm introduces a number of extended techniques, such as flutter-tonguing on the clarinet and string harmonics on the violin and cello. These techniques add to the overall sense of unease and tension in the music. The climax of Deploration is a frenzied, virtuosic section in which all four instruments play at once, creating a dense, chaotic texture. This section gradually subsides, and the piece ends with a quiet, mournful coda. Overall, Deploration is a powerful and emotionally charged work that showcases Rihm's skill as a composer. Its use of extended techniques and dissonant harmonies make it a challenging piece for performers, but its intense emotional content makes it a rewarding experience for both performers and listeners.
