Drill is a contemporary classical composition by Evan Ziporyn, an American composer and clarinetist. The piece was composed in 1994 and premiered on March 3, 1995, at the Merkin Concert Hall in New York City. Drill is a single-movement work that lasts approximately 20 minutes. The piece is scored for a chamber ensemble consisting of clarinet, bass clarinet, violin, cello, and percussion. The percussion section includes a marimba, vibraphone, and various drums and cymbals. The piece is characterized by its use of repetitive rhythmic patterns and minimalist techniques. The opening section features a driving, syncopated rhythm in the percussion and clarinet, which is gradually joined by the other instruments. The rhythmic patterns shift and evolve throughout the piece, creating a sense of momentum and energy. The instrumentation of Drill is also notable for its use of extended techniques. The clarinet and bass clarinet parts include multiphonics, glissandos, and other unconventional sounds, while the percussion section features complex polyrhythms and unconventional playing techniques. Despite its minimalist influences, Drill is not a purely abstract work. Ziporyn has described the piece as being inspired by the rhythms and textures of Indonesian gamelan music, which he studied extensively during his time as a Fulbright scholar in Bali. The piece also incorporates elements of jazz and rock music, particularly in its use of improvisation and rhythmic complexity. Overall, Drill is a dynamic and engaging work that showcases Ziporyn's skill as a composer and his interest in exploring the intersections between different musical traditions.
