Symphony No. 3, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, is a composition by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. It was composed in 1976 and premiered on April 4, 1977, in Royan, France. The symphony is divided into three movements and is scored for soprano soloist, orchestra, and choir. The first movement, Lento - Sostenuto tranquillo ma cantabile, is based on a 15th-century Polish folk song. The soprano soloist sings a lament for a mother who has lost her son in war. The music is slow and mournful, with the orchestra providing a somber accompaniment. The movement ends with a haunting melody played by the solo cello. The second movement, Tranquillo, is instrumental and features a solo for the cor anglais. The music is peaceful and serene, providing a contrast to the first movement. The third movement, Lento - Cantabile-semplice, is based on a prayer written on the wall of a Gestapo cell by a young girl during World War II. The soprano soloist sings the prayer, which asks the Virgin Mary to comfort those who are suffering. The music is slow and meditative, with the choir providing a gentle background. The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs is characterized by its use of dissonance and unconventional harmonies. Penderecki employs a wide range of orchestral colors, from the mournful sound of the solo cello to the peaceful cor anglais solo. The soprano soloist is given a prominent role, singing the texts that provide the emotional core of the work. The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs has become one of Penderecki's most famous works and is considered a masterpiece of 20th-century music. Its themes of loss and mourning have resonated with audiences around the world, and the work has been performed by orchestras and choirs in many countries.
