Agostino Steffani was an Italian composer, diplomat, and bishop who lived from 1654 to 1728. He was a prolific composer of operas, chamber music, and sacred music, and his works were highly regarded during his lifetime. One of his most famous works is the aria "Occhi, perchè piangete?" from his opera "Niobe, regina di Tebe." "Niobe, regina di Tebe" was composed in 1688 and premiered in Munich in the same year. The opera is based on the Greek myth of Niobe, a queen who boasted about her many children and was punished by the gods by having all of her children killed. The aria "Occhi, perchè piangete?" is sung by Niobe after she discovers that all of her children have been killed. The aria is in the key of A minor and is written for a soprano voice accompanied by a basso continuo. It is a lament, with the soprano asking her eyes why they are crying when she has no tears left to shed. The melody is haunting and melancholy, with long, flowing lines that express the depth of Niobe's grief. The basso continuo provides a simple, yet effective accompaniment that supports the vocal line without overpowering it. The aria is divided into two sections, with the first section being slower and more introspective, while the second section is faster and more agitated. The change in tempo and mood reflects Niobe's emotional state as she moves from despair to anger. The second section also features a more complex vocal line, with faster runs and trills that add to the intensity of the music. Overall, "Occhi, perchè piangete?" is a beautiful and moving aria that showcases Steffani's skill as a composer. Its emotional depth and expressive melody have made it a favorite of sopranos and audiences alike, and it remains a popular piece in the repertoire of Baroque music.
