"The Musical Sacrifice" is a satirical composition by the fictional composer P.D.Q. Bach, created by musical humorist Peter Schickele. The piece was composed in 1980 and premiered on April 1st of that year at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City. The composition is divided into three movements, each of which is a parody of a different musical style. The first movement, titled "The Preachers of Crimetheus," is a send-up of the Baroque era, with its complex counterpoint and ornate melodies. The second movement, "Echo Sonata for Two Unfriendly Groups of Instruments," is a parody of the Classical era, with its use of sonata form and contrasting themes. The final movement, "The Short-Tempered Clavier," is a spoof of the Romantic era, with its use of chromaticism and emotional intensity. One of the defining characteristics of "The Musical Sacrifice" is its use of musical jokes and puns. For example, the title of the first movement is a play on the name of the Greek mythological figure Prometheus, who stole fire from the gods and gave it to humans. The second movement features two groups of instruments that are "unfriendly" to each other, with one group playing loudly and the other playing softly. The final movement is a parody of J.S. Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier," with each of the 24 preludes and fugues being condensed into a single measure. Another characteristic of the piece is its use of unconventional instrumentation. In addition to traditional orchestral instruments, "The Musical Sacrifice" includes such unusual instruments as the "slide whistle in B-flat," the "windbreaker," and the "tromboon" (a combination of a trombone and a bassoon). Overall, "The Musical Sacrifice" is a humorous and irreverent take on classical music, poking fun at the conventions and traditions of the genre while still showcasing Schickele's considerable musical talent.
