"Endimione" is an opera in two parts composed by Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. The opera was composed in 1765 and premiered in London in the same year. It is based on the myth of Endymion, a shepherd who was loved by the moon goddess Selene. The first part of the opera begins with Endimione lamenting his unrequited love for the goddess Diana. He falls asleep and is visited by Selene, who falls in love with him. Selene asks the god of sleep, Somnus, to put Endimione into an eternal sleep so that she can be with him forever. Diana, jealous of Selene's love for Endimione, tries to prevent the union by sending a monster to kill Selene. However, Selene is saved by the god of love, who convinces Diana to let the lovers be together. The second part of the opera sees Endimione and Selene happily together, but their happiness is threatened by the god of envy, who tries to separate them. The god of love intervenes once again and convinces the god of envy to let the lovers be together. The music of "Endimione" is characterized by its lyrical melodies and elegant orchestration. The opera features arias, duets, and ensembles that showcase Bach's skill as a composer. The vocal writing is particularly notable, with the singers given ample opportunity to display their vocal range and expressiveness. "Endimione" was well-received at its premiere and was performed several times in London. However, it fell out of favor in the following years and was largely forgotten until the 20th century. Today, it is occasionally performed and recorded, and is recognized as an important work in the development of classical opera.
