Wuji is a contemporary classical composition by Chinese-American composer Zhou Long. It was composed in 2015 and premiered on March 5, 2016, by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Long Yu. The composition is divided into three movements, each of which represents a different aspect of Chinese philosophy. The first movement, titled "Wuji," is named after the concept of the same name in Taoism, which refers to the state of emptiness or non-being that precedes the creation of the universe. The movement is characterized by a sense of stillness and quietude, with sparse instrumentation and long, sustained notes that create a sense of space and openness. The second movement, titled "Taiji," is named after the concept of the same name in Taoism, which refers to the interplay of yin and yang energies that give rise to the universe. The movement is characterized by a sense of movement and energy, with fast, rhythmic passages and sudden shifts in dynamics and texture that evoke the dynamic interplay of opposing forces. The third movement, titled "Bagua," is named after the eight trigrams of the I Ching, a Chinese divination text. Each of the eight trigrams represents a different aspect of the natural world, and the movement is structured around a series of variations on these themes. The movement is characterized by a sense of playfulness and whimsy, with lively rhythms and colorful orchestration that evoke the natural world in all its diversity and complexity. Overall, Wuji is a powerful and evocative work that draws on the rich traditions of Chinese philosophy and culture to create a unique and compelling musical experience. Through its use of sparse instrumentation, dynamic contrasts, and colorful orchestration, the composition captures the essence of the natural world and the forces that shape it, inviting listeners on a journey of discovery and exploration.
