Die Freunde von Salamanka, D. 326 is an opera composed by Franz Schubert in 1815. The plot revolves around two friends, Don Octavio and Don Alfonso, who are in love with the same woman, Donna Anna. However, Donna Anna is in love with Don Octavio, which causes a rift between the two friends. Don Alfonso decides to leave Salamanka and travel to America, hoping to forget his love for Donna Anna. The opera is divided into three movements. The first movement begins with a lively overture, setting the tone for the rest of the opera. The second movement is a duet between Don Octavio and Donna Anna, expressing their love for each other. The third movement is a trio between Don Octavio, Don Alfonso, and Donna Anna, where the two friends reconcile and Donna Anna chooses Don Octavio as her lover. The opera premiered on August 18, 1820, at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna. It was not well-received by critics and audiences, and Schubert never attempted to have it performed again during his lifetime. One of the characteristics of Die Freunde von Salamanka is its use of Spanish themes and rhythms, reflecting the popularity of Spanish culture in Vienna at the time. Schubert also incorporates elements of Italian opera, such as the use of recitative and aria. Overall, Die Freunde von Salamanka is not one of Schubert's most well-known works, but it is an interesting example of his early operatic style and his experimentation with different musical forms and influences.
