On the Verge of Dreaming is a contemporary classical composition by Canadian composer and pianist Alain Lefèvre. The piece was composed in 2018 and premiered on October 25th of the same year at the Maison symphonique de Montréal, performed by the Orchestre Métropolitain under the direction of Vincent de Kort. The composition consists of three movements, each with its own distinct character and mood. The first movement, titled "L'envol" (The Flight), is marked by a sense of urgency and restlessness, with the piano and orchestra engaging in a lively and energetic dialogue. The second movement, "Le songe" (The Dream), is more introspective and contemplative, with the piano taking on a more prominent role and the orchestra providing a delicate and ethereal backdrop. The final movement, "L'éveil" (The Awakening), is marked by a sense of resolution and triumph, with the piano and orchestra coming together in a grand and celebratory finale. Throughout the piece, Lefèvre showcases his virtuosic piano skills, with the instrument often taking center stage and engaging in intricate and complex passages. At the same time, the orchestration is lush and colorful, with a wide range of instruments and textures used to create a rich and dynamic sonic landscape. Overall, On the Verge of Dreaming is a powerful and evocative work that showcases Lefèvre's talents as both a composer and a performer. Its three movements take the listener on a journey through a range of emotions and moods, ultimately culminating in a triumphant and uplifting finale.
