Silvestre Revueltas was a Mexican composer, violinist, and conductor who was born on December 31, 1899, in Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango, Mexico. He was one of the most important composers of the 20th century in Mexico, and his music is known for its rhythmic complexity, colorful orchestration, and use of Mexican folk music. One of his most famous works is "Cinco Canciones para Niños y Dos Canciones Profanas (7)" for voice and chamber orchestra. The work was composed in 1933 and premiered on November 23, 1934, in Mexico City. The piece consists of seven songs, five of which are for children and two of which are more adult in nature. The first movement, "Canción de cuna para dormir a un negrito" (Lullaby for a Little Black Boy), is a gentle and soothing lullaby that features a simple melody and a delicate orchestration. The second movement, "Canción de cuna para despertar a un negrito" (Lullaby for Waking Up a Little Black Boy), is a more lively and playful lullaby that features a syncopated rhythm and a more complex orchestration. The third movement, "Pregón de las flores" (Flower Vendor's Song), is a lively and colorful song that features a fast-paced rhythm and a bright orchestration. The fourth movement, "Canción de paloma" (Song of the Dove), is a gentle and melancholic song that features a simple melody and a sparse orchestration. The fifth movement, "Canción de cuna para dormir a un negrito" (Lullaby for a Little Black Boy), is a reprise of the first movement, but with a more elaborate orchestration. The sixth movement, "Canción de cuna para despertar a un negrito" (Lullaby for Waking Up a Little Black Boy), is a reprise of the second movement, but with a more complex orchestration. The final movement, "Canción de cuna para dormir a un negrito" (Lullaby for a Little Black Boy), is a reprise of the first and fifth movements, but with a more elaborate orchestration and a more dramatic ending. Overall, "Cinco Canciones para Niños y Dos Canciones Profanas (7)" is a charming and colorful work that showcases Revueltas' skill as a composer and his love for Mexican folk music. The piece is often performed in concerts and recitals, and it remains one of Revueltas' most popular works.
