'Korrespondenz' is a contemporary chamber opera composed by Peter Eötvös. The work was premiered on 14th June 2011 at the Munich Biennale. The libretto of the opera is based on the letters exchanged between the Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann and the German poet Paul Celan. The opera is divided into three movements, each of which explores different aspects of the relationship between Bachmann and Celan. The first movement, titled 'The Meeting', depicts the first encounter between Bachmann and Celan in Vienna in 1948. The music is characterized by a sense of anticipation and tension, reflecting the nervousness and excitement of the two poets as they meet for the first time. The music is also marked by a sense of fragmentation, reflecting the disjointed nature of their conversation as they struggle to communicate with each other. The second movement, titled 'The Separation', explores the growing distance between Bachmann and Celan as their relationship becomes more complicated. The music is characterized by a sense of sadness and loss, reflecting the pain and confusion that both poets feel as they struggle to come to terms with their changing feelings for each other. The music is also marked by a sense of dissonance, reflecting the growing sense of discord between the two poets. The third movement, titled 'The Reunion', depicts the final meeting between Bachmann and Celan in Paris in 1961. The music is characterized by a sense of reconciliation and acceptance, reflecting the deep emotional connection that still exists between the two poets despite their differences. The music is also marked by a sense of resolution, reflecting the sense of closure that both poets feel as they say goodbye to each other for the last time. Overall, 'Korrespondenz' is a powerful and emotionally charged work that explores the complex relationship between two of the most important poets of the 20th century. Through its use of music and text, the opera captures the intensity and complexity of their relationship, while also exploring broader themes of love, loss, and the human condition.
