L'amor coniugale is an opera in two acts composed by Simon Mayr. The opera was composed in 1805 and premiered on January 26, 1805, at the Teatro San Moisè in Venice. The libretto was written by Gaetano Rossi. The plot of L'amor coniugale revolves around the story of a young couple, Count Alfonso and his wife, Rosina. The couple is deeply in love, but their happiness is threatened by the arrival of a new suitor, the Duke of Montebello. The Duke is determined to win Rosina's heart and will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. He uses every trick in the book to try and seduce Rosina, but she remains faithful to her husband. The first act of the opera begins with a duet between Count Alfonso and Rosina, expressing their love for each other. The Duke of Montebello then enters and tries to win Rosina's heart. He sings a seductive aria, but Rosina remains loyal to her husband. The act ends with a quartet in which the Duke, Rosina, Count Alfonso, and Rosina's maid, Lisetta, express their conflicting emotions. The second act begins with a duet between the Duke and Rosina, in which he tries to convince her to leave her husband. However, Rosina remains steadfast in her love for Count Alfonso. The Duke then hatches a plan to kidnap Rosina and force her to marry him. However, his plan is foiled by Count Alfonso and his friends, who rescue Rosina and defeat the Duke. The opera ends with a joyful finale in which the characters celebrate their victory over the Duke and the triumph of true love. L'amor coniugale is characterized by its beautiful melodies, expressive arias, and dramatic ensembles. The opera showcases Mayr's skill as a composer, with its intricate harmonies and masterful orchestration. The opera was well-received at its premiere and remains a popular work in the repertoire of many opera companies today.
