The libretto was written by Giuseppe Maria Foppa and it was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on February 11, 1783. The plot revolves around the character of Don Ettore, a wealthy and vain nobleman who is engaged to three different women at the same time. He believes that he can keep them all happy and satisfied, but his plan backfires when the three women discover his deceitful ways and decide to take revenge. The first act opens with Don Ettore's three fiancées, Rosina, Bettina, and Lisetta, each receiving a letter from him, inviting them to meet him at his villa. They all arrive at the same time and discover each other's presence. Don Ettore tries to explain himself, but the women are furious and decide to teach him a lesson. In the second act, the women come up with a plan to humiliate Don Ettore. They dress up as each other and pretend to be someone else, confusing Don Ettore and making him believe that he is going mad. In the end, Don Ettore realizes his mistake and begs for forgiveness, and the women forgive him. The music of "Lo sposo di tre, marito di nessuna" is characterized by its lightness and humor, typical of the opera buffa genre. Cherubini's score is full of lively and catchy melodies, and the vocal writing is virtuosic and demanding, especially for the three female leads. The premiere of "Lo sposo di tre, marito di nessuna" was a great success, and the opera was performed throughout Italy and Europe in the following years. It is still occasionally performed today, although it is not as well-known as some of Cherubini's other works, such as "Medea" and "Les deux journées".More....
