Magnificat is a choral work composed by Mark Blatchly, a British composer, in 1990. The piece was premiered in the same year by the choir of St. John's College, Cambridge, under the direction of George Guest. The Magnificat is a setting of the canticle of Mary, which is also known as the Song of Mary or the Canticle of the Blessed Virgin. The text is taken from the Gospel of Luke, and it is a hymn of praise to God for the blessings bestowed upon Mary. The Magnificat is divided into six movements, each of which reflects a different aspect of the text. The first movement, "Magnificat anima mea Dominum" (My soul magnifies the Lord), is a joyful and exuberant setting of the opening words of the canticle. The second movement, "Et exultavit spiritus meus" (And my spirit rejoices), is a lively and rhythmic setting that expresses Mary's joy and gratitude. The third movement, "Quia respexit humilitatem" (For he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant), is a gentle and reflective setting that emphasizes Mary's humility and the grace of God. The fourth movement, "Quia fecit mihi magna" (For he who is mighty has done great things for me), is a powerful and majestic setting that celebrates the greatness of God and his blessings. The fifth movement, "Et misericordia eius" (And his mercy is on those who fear him), is a tender and compassionate setting that expresses God's mercy and compassion. The final movement, "Sicut erat in principio" (As it was in the beginning), is a joyful and triumphant setting that brings the work to a rousing conclusion. The Magnificat is characterized by its rich harmonies, expressive melodies, and rhythmic vitality. Blatchly's setting of the canticle is both traditional and innovative, drawing on the rich heritage of choral music while also incorporating contemporary elements. The work is a testament to the enduring power of the Magnificat as a source of inspiration and praise.
