Le Cid is an opera composed by Jules Massenet, with a libretto by Louis Gallet and Édouard Blau. The opera is based on the play of the same name by Pierre Corneille, which tells the story of the legendary Spanish hero, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, also known as El Cid. The opera was composed between 1882 and 1885, and premiered at the Paris Opéra on November 30, 1885. It was an immediate success, and has since become one of Massenet's most popular works. The opera is divided into four acts, and features a number of memorable arias and duets. The first act introduces the main characters, including Rodrigo, his love interest Chimène, and her father, the Count of Gormas.
