Johann Christian Bach's Concerto for keyboard in B flat major, Op. 13/4, CW C65 (T. 296/2) The yellow haired laddie was composed in the mid-1770s. It premiered in London, where Bach was living and working at the time, and was likely performed by the composer himself. The concerto is in three movements: 1. Allegro moderato 2. Andante 3. Allegro assai The first movement opens with a lively, syncopated theme in the keyboard, which is then taken up by the orchestra. The soloist and orchestra engage in a lively dialogue throughout the movement, with the keyboard often playing virtuosic runs and flourishes. The second movement is a lyrical and expressive Andante, with the keyboard playing a simple, singing melody over a gently pulsing accompaniment. The final movement is a fast and energetic Allegro assai, with the keyboard once again taking the lead in a series of dazzling runs and arpeggios. The concerto is characterized by its elegant melodies, sparkling keyboard writing, and lively interplay between soloist and orchestra. It is a fine example of Bach's skill as a composer of keyboard music, and demonstrates his ability to blend the virtuosic style of the Baroque with the more refined and elegant style of the Classical era.
