Eric Coates was a British composer who was known for his light music compositions. He composed two fanfares for a brass ensemble, titled 'Fanfares (2) for 3 trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones, snare drum & cymbals'. The first fanfare was composed in 1935, and the second one was composed in 1952. The premiere of the first fanfare was on 1st January 1936, at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The second fanfare was premiered on 1st January 1953, also at the Royal Albert Hall. Both fanfares were composed for the New Year's Day concerts, which were broadcasted live on BBC radio. The first fanfare consists of three movements, while the second fanfare has two movements. The first movement of the first fanfare is marked 'Allegro con brio', and it is a lively and energetic piece. The second movement is marked 'Andante', and it is a slower and more melodic piece. The third movement is marked 'Allegro vivace', and it is a fast and exciting piece. The first movement of the second fanfare is marked 'Allegro', and it is a fast and rhythmic piece. The second movement is marked 'Andante', and it is a slower and more lyrical piece. Both fanfares are characterized by their use of brass instruments, particularly the trumpets, horns, and trombones. The snare drum and cymbals are used to add a percussive element to the music. The fanfares are also characterized by their lively and celebratory nature, which makes them perfect for New Year's Day concerts. Overall, Eric Coates' 'Fanfares (2) for 3 trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones, snare drum & cymbals' are excellent examples of his light music compositions. They are lively, celebratory, and showcase the brass instruments in a beautiful way.
