Dmitry Shostakovich's opera 'Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, Op. 29a' was composed in 1930-1932 and premiered on January 22, 1934, at the Leningrad Maly Opera Theatre. The opera is based on Nikolai Leskov's novella 'Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District' and tells the story of Katerina Ismailova, a bored and oppressed wife who has an affair with a worker and murders her husband and father-in-law.
