Alessandro Grandi was an Italian composer of the early Baroque period, born in Ferrara in 1586. He was a prolific composer of sacred music, and his motet "Salvum me fac, Deus" is one of his most famous works. "Salvum me fac, Deus" is a motet for five voices, composed in the early 17th century. It was likely written for use in the liturgy of the Catholic Church, and is a setting of Psalm 68, verse 2: "Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck." The motet is divided into three movements. The first movement is a slow and solemn setting of the text, with the voices singing in homophony. The second movement is more lively, with the voices singing in imitative counterpoint. The third movement returns to the slow and solemn style of the first movement, with the voices once again singing in homophony. The characteristics of "Salvum me fac, Deus" reflect the style of early Baroque sacred music. The use of homophonic and imitative counterpoint, as well as the use of contrasting tempos and dynamics, are typical of the period. The text is set with great sensitivity to its meaning, with the music reflecting the emotions of the psalmist as he cries out to God for salvation. "Salvum me fac, Deus" was likely first performed in a liturgical setting, and would have been heard by the faithful as part of the worship service. Today, it is still performed in concert settings, and is considered a masterpiece of early Baroque sacred music.
