"Judith" is an opera composed by Alexander Nikolayevich Serov, a Russian composer, and premiered on January 19, 1863, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The libretto was written by the composer's brother, Valerian Serov, based on the biblical story of Judith and Holofernes. The opera is divided into three acts and tells the story of Judith, a Jewish widow who saves her people from the Assyrian army by seducing and beheading their general, Holofernes. The first act introduces the main characters and sets the scene for the impending battle between the Assyrians and the Jews. Judith is portrayed as a strong and determined woman who is willing to do whatever it takes to save her people. In the second act, Judith seduces Holofernes and gains his trust. She then beheads him while he is sleeping, and brings his head back to her people as proof of their victory. This act is filled with tension and suspense as Judith must navigate her way through the Assyrian camp and carry out her plan without being caught. The final act deals with the aftermath of the battle and Judith's triumph. She is hailed as a hero by her people, but also faces criticism and condemnation for her actions. The opera ends with Judith reflecting on the price of victory and the sacrifices she had to make. "Judith" is known for its lush orchestration and dramatic vocal writing. Serov's use of leitmotifs and recurring themes helps to unify the opera and create a sense of continuity throughout the three acts. The opera also features a number of memorable arias and duets, including Judith's powerful aria "O, my people!" and her duet with Holofernes, "Come, my lord." Despite its initial success, "Judith" fell out of favor in the years following its premiere and was rarely performed. However, it has since been rediscovered and is now considered a masterpiece of Russian opera.
