"Calligraphies" is a composition for string quartet by Iranian-American composer Reza Vali. It was composed in 2000 and premiered on March 3, 2001, by the Kronos Quartet at the University of Pittsburgh. The piece is divided into five movements, each inspired by a different style of Persian calligraphy. The first movement, "Nastaliq," is named after a cursive script and features flowing, melodic lines that imitate the curves and loops of the calligraphy. The second movement, "Shekasteh," is named after a broken script and is characterized by jagged, fragmented phrases that reflect the script's sharp angles and breaks. The third movement, "Naskh," is named after a clear, legible script and features a more straightforward, diatonic melody. The fourth movement, "Taliq," is named after a hanging script and features long, suspended notes that evoke the script's elongated lines. The final movement, "Solth," is named after a bold, thick script and features a driving, rhythmic pulse. Vali's use of Persian calligraphy as a source of inspiration for the piece reflects his interest in the intersection of music and visual art. The piece also draws on Vali's background as an Iranian-American composer, blending Western classical music with Persian musical traditions. The result is a unique and evocative work that showcases Vali's distinctive voice as a composer.
