"Carrousel (after J. S. Bach)" is a contemporary classical composition by Dutch composer Judith Steenbrink. The piece was composed in 2012 and premiered on November 17, 2012, at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam, performed by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. The composition consists of four movements, each inspired by a different piece by Johann Sebastian Bach. The first movement, "Prelude," is based on Bach's Prelude in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier. The second movement, "Sarabande," is based on Bach's Sarabande from the Cello Suite No. 5. The third movement, "Gigue," is based on Bach's Gigue from the Violin Partita No. 2. The final movement, "Chaconne," is based on Bach's Chaconne from the Partita No. 2 for Solo Violin. Steenbrink's composition is characterized by its use of minimalist techniques, such as repetition and gradual transformation of musical material. The piece also features a prominent role for the solo violin, which is often accompanied by the string orchestra. The use of counterpoint and polyphony, which are hallmarks of Bach's music, are also evident in Steenbrink's composition. Overall, "Carrousel (after J. S. Bach)" is a contemporary tribute to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, showcasing Steenbrink's skill as a composer and her ability to draw inspiration from the past while creating something new and original.
