Antonio de Cabezón was a Spanish composer and organist who lived during the Renaissance period. He was born in 1510 in Castrillo Mota de Judíos, Burgos, and died in 1566 in Madrid. Cabezón was one of the most important composers of his time, and his works were highly regarded by his contemporaries. One of Cabezón's most famous works is 'Diferencias sobre la Pavana Italiana', which was composed in the mid-16th century. The piece is a set of variations on the popular Italian dance, the Pavan. The Pavan was a slow, stately dance that was popular in Europe during the Renaissance period. 'Diferencias sobre la Pavana Italiana' is divided into six movements, each of which is a variation on the original Pavan theme. The first movement is a simple statement of the theme, followed by five variations that become increasingly complex and virtuosic. The first variation is a simple embellishment of the theme, with added ornamentation and a more elaborate bass line. The second variation is more rhythmically complex, with syncopated rhythms and a more active bass line. The third variation is a slower, more contemplative variation, with a more lyrical melody and a more subdued bass line. The fourth variation is a tour-de-force of virtuosity, with rapid-fire runs and arpeggios that showcase the performer's technical skill. The fifth and final variation is a return to the original theme, but with added ornamentation and a more elaborate bass line. 'Diferencias sobre la Pavana Italiana' is a prime example of Cabezón's skill as a composer and his ability to create complex and virtuosic works that were highly regarded by his contemporaries. The piece is still performed today and is considered a masterpiece of the Renaissance period.
