He was a member of the group of composers known as the Mighty Handful, which also included Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, César Cui, and Mily Balakirev. Lyadov was known for his small-scale works, such as his Mazurkas (2), Op. 15. The Mazurkas (2), Op. 15 were composed in 1888 and premiered the same year. The work consists of two movements, each of which is a mazurka, a traditional Polish dance in triple meter. The first movement is marked Allegro moderato and is in the key of G minor. It begins with a simple melody in the right hand accompanied by a chordal pattern in the left hand. The melody is then repeated with some variation, and the left hand takes on a more active role. The middle section of the movement is in the key of B-flat major and features a more lyrical melody. The movement ends with a return to the opening material. The second movement is marked Allegro con fuoco and is in the key of A minor. It begins with a fast and lively melody in the right hand accompanied by a driving rhythm in the left hand. The middle section of the movement is in the key of C major and features a more playful melody. The movement ends with a return to the opening material, which is played with even more energy and intensity. The Mazurkas (2), Op. 15 are characteristic of Lyadov's style, which is marked by its simplicity, clarity, and elegance. The melodies are memorable and singable, and the harmonies are straightforward and uncluttered. The rhythms are lively and dance-like, and the overall effect is one of charm and grace. The Mazurkas (2), Op. 15 are a fine example of Lyadov's skill at creating small-scale works that are both delightful and satisfying.More....
