(co)ro(na) is a contemporary classical composition by Lithuanian composer Vykintas Baltakas. The piece was composed in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and premiered on September 12, 2020, at the Musikfest Berlin festival. The composition consists of three movements, each exploring different aspects of the pandemic. The first movement, titled "Virus," is characterized by a frenzied, chaotic energy, with dissonant chords and rapid, staccato rhythms evoking the rapid spread of the virus. The second movement, "Lockdown," is more introspective, with slow, mournful melodies and sparse instrumentation reflecting the isolation and loneliness of quarantine. The final movement, "Hope," is more optimistic, with brighter harmonies and more energetic rhythms suggesting the possibility of recovery and renewal. Throughout the piece, Baltakas employs a variety of contemporary classical techniques, including extended techniques on traditional instruments, electronic manipulation of sound, and unconventional use of percussion. The result is a complex and challenging work that reflects the uncertainty and upheaval of the pandemic while also offering a glimmer of hope for the future.
