L'Afrique d'après Tiepolo is a contemporary classical composition by French composer Hugues Dufourt. The piece was composed in 2006 and premiered on October 20th of the same year at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, France. The composition is divided into three movements, each of which is inspired by a painting by the Italian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The first movement, titled "Le Sacrifice d'Abraham," is based on Tiepolo's painting of the same name. The second movement, "Le Triomphe de Zénith," is inspired by Tiepolo's painting "Le Triomphe de Zénith et de la Renommée." The final movement, "Le Jugement de Salomon," is based on Tiepolo's painting "Le Jugement de Salomon." The piece is characterized by its use of extended techniques, such as microtonality and multiphonics, as well as its exploration of timbre and texture. Dufourt also incorporates elements of African music, such as polyrhythms and call-and-response patterns, into the composition. Overall, L'Afrique d'après Tiepolo is a complex and innovative work that combines elements of classical music and African music to create a unique and compelling listening experience.
