Tarquinio Merula was an Italian composer of the Baroque era, born in Cremona in 1595. He was a prolific composer of vocal and instrumental music, and his works were widely performed during his lifetime. One of his most famous compositions is the Laudate Pueri, con ritornelli, a sacred vocal work for five voices and continuo. The Laudate Pueri, con ritornelli was composed in the early 17th century, and it is believed to have been premiered in Venice, where Merula spent much of his career. The work is divided into five movements, each of which is based on a different section of the psalm Laudate Pueri Dominum (Psalm 113). The first movement is a lively and joyful setting of the opening verses of the psalm, featuring a lively ritornello played by the continuo instruments. The second movement is a more contemplative setting of the next section of the psalm, with a solo voice singing the text over a simple continuo accompaniment. The third movement is a lively and rhythmic setting of the third section of the psalm, with the voices and instruments alternating in a call-and-response pattern. The fourth movement is a more complex and elaborate setting of the fourth section of the psalm, with the voices and instruments weaving intricate counterpoint around the text. The final movement is a joyful and exuberant setting of the final section of the psalm, with the voices and instruments coming together in a grand finale. Throughout the work, Merula employs a variety of vocal and instrumental textures, from solo voices to full choir, and from simple continuo accompaniment to elaborate ritornelli. Overall, the Laudate Pueri, con ritornelli is a masterful example of Baroque vocal music, showcasing Merula's skill as a composer and his deep understanding of the psalm text. Its lively rhythms, intricate counterpoint, and joyful spirit make it a beloved work of the Baroque repertoire.
