"Catone, HWV A7" is an opera seria in three acts composed by George Frederick Handel. The libretto was written by Metastasio and the opera was first performed at the King's Theatre in London on December 26, 1732. The plot of "Catone" is based on the story of Cato the Younger, a Roman statesman and philosopher who opposed Julius Caesar and committed suicide rather than submit to him. The opera takes place in Utica, where Cato has retreated after the defeat of Pompey. Caesar's emissary, Curio, arrives to negotiate with Cato, but Cato refuses to compromise his principles and ultimately chooses death over submission. The first act of the opera introduces the characters and sets up the conflict between Cato and Caesar. The second act focuses on the negotiations between Cato and Curio, as well as the romantic subplot involving Cato's daughter, Marzia, and Caesar's ally, Arbace. The third act culminates in Cato's decision to commit suicide, which is followed by a final chorus mourning his death. "Catone" is notable for its use of Metastasio's libretto, which was highly influential in the development of opera seria. The libretto emphasizes the conflict between duty and passion, as well as the idea of the noble hero who chooses death over compromise. Handel's music is characterized by its virtuosity and emotional intensity, particularly in the arias and duets. The premiere of "Catone" was a success, and the opera was performed several times during Handel's lifetime. However, it fell out of favor in the 19th century and was not revived until the 20th century. Today, "Catone" is considered one of Handel's lesser-known operas, but it remains an important example of the opera seria genre and Metastasio's influence on it.
