"Sehnsucht Was zieht mir das Herz so" is a Lied composed by Fanny Mendelssohn in 1846. It was premiered in Berlin on March 15, 1846, with Fanny herself at the piano and her sister, the famous composer Felix Mendelssohn, accompanying on the violin. The piece is part of a collection of six Lieder, Op. 9, which Fanny dedicated to her husband, Wilhelm Hensel. The Lied is in A minor and has a slow and melancholic character. It is divided into three sections, with the first and third sections having the same melody and the middle section having a contrasting melody. The piano accompaniment is simple and repetitive, with a descending arpeggio pattern that creates a sense of longing and sadness. The text of the Lied is a poem by Emanuel Geibel, which speaks of the feeling of longing and the pain it causes. The first stanza sets the mood with the line "Sehnsucht was zieht mir das Herz so?" (Longing, what draws my heart so?). The second stanza describes the pain of separation and the desire to be reunited with the loved one. The final stanza expresses the hope that the longing will be fulfilled and the pain will be relieved. Fanny Mendelssohn's "Sehnsucht Was zieht mir das Herz so" is a beautiful example of Romantic Lieder, with its expressive melody and poignant text. It showcases Fanny's talent as a composer and her ability to convey deep emotions through music.
