Requiem for Mehmet is a choral work composed by Kamran Ince in 2015. It was premiered on April 24, 2015, at the Istanbul Congress Center, Turkey, by the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Choir, conducted by Sascha Goetzel. The work is divided into six movements, each representing a different aspect of the tragedy of Mehmet Ayvalitas, a young man who was killed during the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul in 2013. The movements are titled "Introit," "Kyrie," "Dies Irae," "Offertory," "Sanctus," and "Agnus Dei." The work is characterized by its use of traditional Turkish music elements, such as the use of the ney (a Turkish flute) and the saz (a Turkish stringed instrument), as well as the incorporation of Turkish folk melodies and rhythms. The choral writing is also notable, with the use of dense harmonies and intricate counterpoint. The text of the work is a combination of traditional Latin requiem texts and Turkish poetry, including works by the 13th-century poet Rumi and the contemporary poet Ahmet Telli. The text reflects on the themes of loss, grief, and hope, and the work as a whole serves as a tribute to Mehmet Ayvalitas and all those who have lost their lives in the struggle for freedom and justice. Overall, Requiem for Mehmet is a powerful and moving work that combines elements of Western classical music with traditional Turkish music and poetry to create a unique and poignant tribute to a tragic event in Turkish history.
