La Fiancée is an opera in three acts composed by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber. The libretto was written by Eugène Scribe and was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on December 10, 1829. The plot of La Fiancée revolves around the character of Léon, a young man who is in love with the beautiful and wealthy Laurette. However, Laurette's father, the wealthy merchant Gaspard, has promised her hand in marriage to the wealthy but unscrupulous banker, Saint-Val. Léon and Laurette are determined to be together, but they must overcome the obstacles that stand in their way. The first act of the opera takes place in Gaspard's house, where Léon and Laurette meet secretly. They are interrupted by the arrival of Saint-Val, who is there to discuss the details of his upcoming marriage to Laurette. Léon hides, but overhears Saint-Val's plan to ruin Gaspard's business and force him to give up Laurette. Léon decides to take action to save Gaspard's business and win Laurette's hand. In the second act, Léon disguises himself as a wealthy merchant and gains Saint-Val's trust. He learns more about Saint-Val's plan and is able to foil it, saving Gaspard's business. Meanwhile, Laurette is being pressured by her father to marry Saint-Val, but she remains steadfast in her love for Léon. The final act takes place on the day of Laurette and Saint-Val's wedding. Léon arrives and reveals his true identity, exposing Saint-Val's treachery and winning Laurette's hand in marriage. The opera ends with a joyful celebration of their love. La Fiancée is characterized by Auber's lively and melodic music, which is well-suited to the comic and romantic elements of the story. The opera was a great success at its premiere and has remained popular with audiences ever since. Its themes of love, loyalty, and perseverance continue to resonate with audiences today.
