Homenajes Húngaros is a composition for orchestra by Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra. It was composed in 2000 and premiered on March 22, 2001, by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andreas Delfs. The piece is divided into three movements, each of which pays homage to a different Hungarian composer. The first movement, "Homenaje a Béla Bartók," is characterized by its use of folk melodies and rhythms, which are a hallmark of Bartók's music. The movement begins with a slow, mournful melody played by the strings, which is then taken up by the woodwinds and brass. The tempo gradually increases, and the movement ends with a lively dance. The second movement, "Homenaje a Zoltán Kodály," is more introspective and contemplative than the first. It begins with a solo cello playing a haunting melody, which is then taken up by the rest of the orchestra. The movement is marked by its use of rich harmonies and lush orchestration, which are reminiscent of Kodály's music. The final movement, "Homenaje a György Ligeti," is the most experimental and avant-garde of the three. It begins with a series of dissonant chords played by the brass and percussion, which gradually give way to a frenzied, rhythmic section. The movement is characterized by its use of complex rhythms and unconventional harmonies, which are typical of Ligeti's music. Overall, Homenajes Húngaros is a masterful tribute to three of Hungary's greatest composers. Sierra's use of folk melodies, rich harmonies, and complex rhythms pays homage to the unique musical traditions of Hungary while also showcasing his own distinctive style.
