Island Songs is a musical project composed by Icelandic composer and musician Ólafur Arnalds. The project was released in 2016 and consists of seven songs, each recorded in a different location around Iceland. The project was created as a tribute to Arnalds' homeland and the unique landscapes and cultures found throughout the country. The premiere of Island Songs took place on May 26, 2016, with the release of the first song, "Árbakkinn." The remaining six songs were released one at a time over the course of seven weeks, with the final song, "Doria," released on July 14, 2016. Each song in Island Songs is named after the location where it was recorded, and the movements of the project are defined by these locations. The seven songs are "Árbakkinn," "Öldurót," "Raddir," "Öldurót (Again)," "Dalur," "Particles," and "Doria." The characteristics of Island Songs are defined by Arnalds' unique blend of classical and electronic music, as well as his use of field recordings and collaborations with local musicians. Each song is a reflection of the location where it was recorded, with the sounds of nature and the surrounding environment incorporated into the music. "Árbakkinn" features the sound of a waterfall and the use of a traditional Icelandic instrument called a langspil. "Öldurót" incorporates the sound of waves crashing on the shore and features a collaboration with Icelandic singer and songwriter Arnór Dan. "Raddir" features the sound of a church organ and a choir, while "Öldurót (Again)" is a reimagining of the previous song with a more electronic sound. "Dalur" features the sound of a thunderstorm and a collaboration with Icelandic singer and songwriter Sóley. "Particles" incorporates the sound of a glacier melting and features a collaboration with Icelandic singer and songwriter Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir. Finally, "Doria" features the sound of a boat engine and a collaboration with Icelandic singer and songwriter JFDR. Overall, Island Songs is a unique and innovative project that showcases the beauty and diversity of Iceland through music. Arnalds' use of field recordings and collaborations with local musicians creates a truly immersive and authentic experience for listeners.
